Four Tet: "None of my tracks have been mastered in five or six years"

An interesting tidbit from a Four Tet interview with Groove.

When asked about Four Tet’s recording process being mostly ‘in the box’, he remarks that “Everything is just on my laptop. None of my tracks have been mastered in five or six years.”

When pressed on the mastering thing, he explains that “I would spend seven or eight months working on a piece of music and then it just didn’t make sense to hand it to someone who just adds three decibels of treble. It has worked for me in the past when I’ve done traditional studio things recording on tape. Then mastering makes sense. But nowadays, listening to my finished versions at home, I feel they sound perfectly acceptable and so I decided to remove mastering completely.”

It’s certainly unorthodox, and there’s always a chance Four Tet’s having everyone on (he’s been showing his mischievous side recently), but if true then it’s an interesting thing for fans of his music to bear in mind. You can read the full interview here, and stream Four Tet’s past FACT mix here.
