Hailing from Lisbon, Yong Yong caught notice in 2012 with their über-frowzy debut LP.

The duo’s first album, Love, suggested an outfit heavily indebted to Hype Williams – if you dug Untitled, it followed that you dug Love. The record repeatedly mimicked M. Blunt and Mme. Copeland, often to the point of facsimile, although the album also boasted some interesting sonic miniatures in the vein of Harco Pront and a few unexpected swerves.

Now based in Glasgow, the anonymous pair are back with Greatest It’s – a superior set of synth compositions and ‘marescapes. The touchstones – DJ Screw, DIY pop, the US synth underground – are similar, but it’s a concerted step up, at once richer and eerier than its predecessor. Occasional hack move aside – the detourned rap chatter is SALEM to a T – it’s a convincing collection of blasted synthscapes and curdled hardware jams. Click below to stream Greatest It’s in full.

Greatest It’s is due on Night School on January 27. Head here to preorder.
