Enter the land of nod with Nas.

Annie Mac’s Sunday night Radio 1 show features a regular section called the Bedtime Mix, where artists tailor a playlist designed for the small wee hours; previous contributors include Flying Lotus, Kelis and Little Dragon. Rather excitingly, last night’s edition featured a bespoke four-track playlist from Nas, who also phoned in to explain his choices.

Nas picked The Isley Brothers’ ‘Summer Breeze’ (‘That’s smooth right there, it’s kind of gangsta…Ron Isley got that mack voice”), Sade’s ‘King Of Sorrow’ (‘It’s her classic style of music”) and John Coltrane’s ‘A Love Supreme’ (‘It’s hypnotic…what’s better than the title?”). He also plumped for Illmatic classic ‘N.Y State Of Mind’, which he described as a “perfect night-time record”:

“You know what’s a perfect night-time record? ‘N.Y State of Mind’. I recorded it at night, I wanted it to sound like the night-time. To me, I was writing about the night-time on that song. The piano was sinister, everything about it.”

Head here to stream both interview and mix. Illmatic turns 20 this year; head here to check an unreleased track from the forthcoming reissue.
