The punk surrealists return to the road after the death of guitarist Bob Casale.

Devo will head out on the road again this June for an 11-city North American tour under the banner ‘Hardcore Devo’.

The shows will see the Akron band revisit their “early, experimental songs”, as they had planned before the untimely death of guitarist Bob Casale in February.

Casale’s bandmate and brother Jerry told Rolling Stone that Devo had been making plans for their 40th anniversary celebrations before Bob passed away.

“What we had planned for the 40th anniversary was to go out live and play all the early, experimental songs we wrote that appeared on Hardcore Devo. We haven’t played those songs in 40 years. Songs like ‘Mechanical Man’, ‘Space Girl Blues’, ‘She Didn’t Know I Was a Midget’.

“We wanted to show people what we were doing at the time by using the same instruments, really hardcore and raw. We were the White Stripes and the Black Keys in an era before those guys.”

A portion of the tour’s proceeds will go to Casale’s family to help cover his hefty medical bills. A fund has also been set up to gather donations.

The band has also announced three items for Record Store Day – a live recording from Max’s Kansas City in 1997, a split 7″ featuring The Flaming Lips’ cover of ‘Gates of Steel’ with the original track, and a vinyl picture disc of Devo’s comeback show in 1996. [via CoS]
