Following initial snap sales figures – which suggested a very healthy 2000% increase in vinyl sales – a fuller picture has now emerged of quite what was selling on Record Store Day

As The Guardian report, sales were up 30% on last year’s waxfest. The event, which encompassed 245 shops in the UK, was therefore the most successful RSD yet by some margin.

The best-selling LP of the day was Pixies’ first album in forever, Indie Cindy. Second place went to a limited edition pressing of Ray Parker Jr’s Ghostbusters OST, and bronze to Tame Impala’s Live Versions. The top five was rounded out by a reissue of Adam & The Ants’ Dirk Wears White Sox and Pogues’ Live With Joe Strummer.

The best-selling singles were vinyl versions of David Bowie’s ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Suicide’, Oasis’s ‘Supersonic’, Nirvana’s ‘Pennyroyal Tea’, Bruce Springsteen’s American Beauty EP and One Direction’s ‘Midnight Memories’.

According to Record Store Day UK co-ordinator (and Death Waltz Recording Co. boss) Spencer Hickman, the stats “only tell part of the story.”:

“Record Store Day is ultimately about record store culture, the committed music fans who run indie record shops and the music fans who queue from early in the morning to get their hands on the music they love and enjoy this one-day celebration of music’s grassroots.”

This week, we sat down with Pixies to discuss the new album and sozzled walks in the Welsh mountains. If you missed Record Store Day, you can always retroactively browse out recommendations of the 20 best releases doing the rounds.
