2014 Billboard Music Awards - Roaming Show

Man in the mirror.

The Billboard Music Awards took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas last night, and as tends to happen at these affairs, one performance has comprehensively monopolised the attention.

Michael Jackson made a much-trumpeted (and, truth told, fairly eerie) appearance in hologram form. The ersatz Jackson – who has just scored his 10th UK No. 1 album with posthumous effort Xscape – appeared dressed in his Dangerous get-up, and performed new track ‘Slave To The Rhythm’ surrounded by dancers and plumes of flame.

The performance wasn’t without its controversies: as reported, the appearance was subject to a failed legal challenge by the team behind the 2012 Tupac hologram, who claimed that the technology violated their patents.

Miley Cyrus, meanwhile, recruited old muckers The Flaming Lips to cover The Beatles’ ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds’. Their performance, which looks like a Marc Bolan malarial dream, had been taped in advance at Cyrus’ Manchester tour date last week.

Iggy Azalea also rattled through ‘Fancy’, backed up by Charli XCX. Her performance then merged into recent track ‘Problem’.

Other performers at the night included Lorde, J.Lo, OneRepublic, Katy Perry and Imagine Dragons.
