Watch an animated David Bowie interview from 1988

“I never really felt like a rock singer, a rock star,” Bowie admits.

PBS interview series Blank on Blank has returned to the music world, unearthing a quarter-century old interview with David Bowie.

Recorded during the critical low-point between Never Let Me Down and his stint in Tin Machine, Bowie is modest about his talents: “I am not a great singer but I can interpret a song, which I don’t think is quite the same as singing it.” Most of the interview focuses on the creation of Ziggy Stardust (“I mean he was half out of sci-fi rock and half out of the Japanese theater.”) and revisits his brief employment at an ad agency.

Watch the animated interview below. The audio is taken from Joe Smith’s cassette tape, recorded during the writing of Off the Record: An Oral History of Popular Music. Previous Blank on Blank interviews have focused on Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix and more.
