DJ Rashad died of a drug overdose, autopsy confirms

The footwork icon passed away in April.

After several conflicting accounts, an autopsy has confirmed that DJ Rashad died from a drug overdose. Toxicological tests revealed that Rashad died of heroin, cocaine and alprazolam intoxication; his death was ruled an accident.

Police stated at the time that both narcotics and drug paraphernalia were discovered near the body.

In the weeks following Rashad’s passing, his cousin claimed that the cause of death was a blood clot. This information was initially passed on by DJ Rashad’s label Hyperdub, though Hyperdub quickly distanced themselves from the quote, explaining that this was not confirmed and may not have been accurate.

The dance music world is still mourning Rashad’s death, celebrating the impact of his music and paying tribute with DJ sets and radio shows across the world.  Hyperdub released a statement in late April that included kind words from those who knew him best, and the label will continue to release his unheard material.
