The Week's Best Vinyl Releases

Few people are onto great records as quickly as a great record store.

After years spent discovering gems in Phonica’s end of year lists, it made sense to give them a regular space on FACT. Every Saturday, Phonica staff will pick out the five vinyl records you should grab this week.

FLOATING POINTS
‘Sparkling Controversy’
(Eglo)

A new FloPo single is always worthy of investigation, and on this occasion Sam Shepherd turns in a gorgeous dub version of his 2011 track ‘ARP 3’ – a very nifty one-sided 12″ to set off these stormy summer nights we’ve been having.

MOTON RECORDS
Dreeme
(MOTON RECORDS)

Three loopy edits from London’s long-running Moton Records, spanning drowsy, melodica-enhanced grooves on the title track (an edit of Max Berlin’s ‘Elle et Moi’), heel-snapping disco on ‘She & He’ and druggy funk on ‘Step’.

PYE CORNER AUDIO/NOT WAVING
Intercepts LP
(Ecstatic Recordings)

Not Waving’s Alessio Natalizia (also of WALLS and formerly Banjo Or Freakout) teams up with spooky Brit producer Pye Corner Audio for a split LP of dreamy techno, cosmic arpeggiations and fuzzed-up ambient wanderings all inspired by spy rings and covert operations. Excellent sleeve, too.

DANIEL GRAU
Reworks Vol. 1
(Sonar Kollektiv)

Ahead of a full compilation showcasing the cosmic disco of Venezuelan producer Daniel Grau comes a two-sided taster with remixes from Daniel Wang and Jules Etienne, who pair up to deliver slick versions of 1978’s ‘Robot Mágico’ and 1979’s ‘Disco Fantasy’.

LORD OF THE ISLES
‘Greane/Gigha’
(Phonica Records)

One from our own stable with the return of the prolific Lord Of The Isles, AKA Scotsman Neil McDonald, who offers two lengthy trips in the shape of the slow-building, pitch-bending stomper ‘Greane’ and the dreamier, acid-tinged flipside ‘Gigha’. The fine artwork is by designer Jack Featherstone (Border Community, Warm, Electric Minds).
