Grimes scraps album after negative reaction to 'Go'

An update on Claire Boucher’s follow-up to 2012’s Visions.

Earlier this summer, Grimes released ‘Go’, a woozy summer anthem that was written for (but passed over by) Rihanna. The poppy, EDM-influenced single shocked some fans (although it probably shouldn’t have), and in an interview with The New York Times, Boucher explains how it affected her new album.

“[‘Go’] upsets a lot of my fans, and I get why it upsets them,” she says. “Everybody was like, ‘Oh, Grimes is pandering to the radio.’” The criticism resonated: Boucher was unhappy with the album’s then-form: “It sucked… so I threw it out and started again.”

Boucher also opted for a portable recording set-up. “I took my advance and I used it to have my own studio,” she explains. “Recording in professional studios is the worst idea — I don’t know why anybody even does it . . . they’re so expensive.”

No word on when the follow-up to Visions will see the light of day, but considering ‘Go’ dropped in late June, we’re not sure if it will come out before or after Boiler Room posts her infamous DJ set.
