From Björk to Wiley, this is where musicians stand on the Scottish referendum

bjork-9.17.2014

Tomorrow, the Scottish people vote on the biggest political question in a generation. Ever the psephologists, we’ve plotted out where the music world currently stand on the eve of what looks to be a photo-finish referendum:

Yes

Stuart Braithwaite, Mogwai: “That is one of the main reasons why I want Scotland to be an independent country because I don’t think an independent Scotland would want nuclear weapons and I certainly would like to think that the government that a Scottish people voted for would be more sensible than to spend that much money on them when there’s people to feed and hospitals to build.” (link)

JD Twitch (Optimo): “I think in the last 10 or 20 years cultural confidence in Scotland has increased greatly. I think we punch above our weight in all the arts and I think independence will only give us even more self confidence to continue that.” (link)

Björk: “s c o t l a n d ! / declare independence! / don’t let them do that to you!” (link)

Wiley: “Scotland having Independence will be a great thing.” (link)

Stuart Murdoch, Belle & Sebastian: “I must admit in the past year, since there has been this live debate, I have come off the fence and swung the other way. I just think it’s time that Scotland became an independent country, for political reasons. We might actually show England the way. England seems to be a little bit lost – obsessed with immigration, obsessed with anti-European sentiment, all these negative things. Maybe it’s just time to cast off and do our own thing.” (link)

El-P: “Scotland even if for some reason you vote no we will still come out there ASAP and play an”eh fuck it” party for you. promise.” (link)

Aidan John Moffat: “Independence isn’t about breaking away or creating borders, nor nationalist pride. It’s about building the better society that we hope for.” (link)

Altered Natives: “I’m not even Scottish ffs and I want independence for Scotland.” (link)

Billy Bragg: “If the Scots want to show some solidarity with the people in England who feel trapped in a centralised state where cheap credit, privatisation and deregulation are the only solutions offered, they should vote yes to independence and set us all free.” (link)

Morrissey: “They must cut ties with the United King-dumb. I love Scotland, and I love the Scottish spirit and they do not need Westminster in the least.” (link)

Chuck D: “They’re smart and it’s time. It’s 2014. Scotland can have independence.” (link)

JME: “If I was Scotland I would buss out.” (link)

The Black Dog: “Vote Yes” (link)

xxxy: “Go Scotland”; “I got out of the UK and so can you” (link)

No

King Creosote: “London is a portal for the world, and Glasgow or Edinburgh isn’t. All it will do is create another level of bureaucracy and that’s not going to change anything. It’s dangerous. Scots don’t get behind our own. We don’t accept our failures. We need someone to blame and if that’s not Westminster, who is it?” (link)

Bob Geldof: “I’d just like to tell everybody in Scotland we’re all fucking fed up with Westminster and it’s even more frustrating for us because we don’t even get to do the argument that you’ve begun,” he said. “This argument needs to be had among us all, you can’t selfishly resolve it amongst yourselves by taking an easy opt-out clause.” (link)

Susan Boyle: “I don’t feel reassured that the change will in any way make our already great country better. We should not be wasting money on this change – we should be putting it into areas that need it the most.” (link)

Bryan Ferry, Sting, Mick Jagger, Dave Gilmourall signatories on the Let’s Stay Together open letter.

David Bowie: “Scotland – stay with us.” (link)
