Mercury-nominated jazz explorers Polar Bear unveil 'Cuckoo' with remix from Swamp81's Paleman

British jazz/electronics crew get remixed by Swamp81 producer.

The Mercury Prize nominations always contain a couple of outliers from the folk and jazz worlds, and they’re regularly in a class above the eventual victor. This year’s shortlist includes a well-deserved nod for Polar Bear, whose fifth album In Each And Every One crowns a decade of weird experiments at the fringes of jazz and electronica.

Bandleader Seb Rochford has now unveiled ‘Cuckoo’, a dark new song based on an unused part he wrote for album track ‘Chotpot’, and featuring London singer Jin Jin. ‘Cuckoo’ is getting a digital release on October 27 alongside a remix from techno talent Paleman, whose choppy dance floor version is powered by trashcan drums and tribal bass.

Listen to both below, and find out if Polar Bear win the Mercury Prize on October 29. Catch them on tour this autumn – see dates below – and remind yourself of Paleman’s FACT mix from 2013, which features cuts from Zed Bias, Walton and South London Ordnance.

Tour dates:

Thursday 9 October – The Lexington, London
Sunday 26 October – Calstock Jazz & Blues Festival, Cornwall
Thursday 13 November – The Auditorium, Sheffield University, Sheffield
Friday 19 December – Firebug, Leicester
