First glimpse of forthcoming made-for-TV movie on the R&B star.

US TV network Lifetime has unveiled the trailer for Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, a biopic starring Alexandra Shipp as the late singer. The trailer shows Shipp as a young Aaliyah listening to her mother’s advice on her career: “It takes more than some hot producer to create a superstar. It takes the right artist.” Watch it above (apologies for the Rick Ross ad).

The featured song in the trailer isn’t one of Aaliyah’s hits but an Iggy Azalea track, ‘Goddess’, which appears on the Aussie rapper’s recently released debut album. That’ll be because Aaliyah’s family refused permission to use her songs, maintaining that the TV biopic isn’t a major enough project. A representative from the singer’s estate previously stated that she “deserves to have a tribute much more grand than a television network debut that won’t even consider the perspectives of those who were closest to Aaliyah.”

Earlier this year Disney starlet Zendaya quit her title role in the biopic after criticism over her casting, adding to the controversy surrounding the project.
