After years spent discovering gems in Phonica’s end of year lists, it made sense to give them a regular space on FACT. Every Saturday, staff from the Soho institution will pick out the five vinyl records you should grab this week.

Frankfurt destination Live At Robert Johnson’s continues its FDO series with a double dose of disco-fired edits, supposedly crafted by a producer affiliated with the club… thinking caps on! Whoever it is has a fondness for vintage Swiss electronica (Yello on side one) and spangly jazz shamanism (Sun Ra on the flip), so they’re alright in our book.

No, it’s not a hormonal weight loss supplement – Ekranoplan is in fact the surprisingly bleepy-bloopy and stunningly hi-def new venture from Bristol bass lad Julio Bashmore and his fellow townsman, Livity Sound producer Kowton. Much floaty gorgeousness lies within.

Ingenious two-part edit of David Bowie’s 1971 ode to his pop art hero. Munich producer Leroy (of Rhythm Police) goes for a peppy, vocal-led arrangement on ‘Andy’ before scraping it down to a quite weird dub version on the B-side, ‘Warhol’. Only 200 copies of this one.

Keen for this reissue of Hailu Mergia and the Walias’ 1977 instrumental jazz LP, considered a collector’s piece for its unique combination of traditional Ethiopian music with electronic instrumentation and the keyboardist and accordionist’s own funk-laced jazz style. Exactly the sort of record that needs to be owned on vinyl, so get it while it can be got.
