Belgian festival Tomorrowland expands to India

The world’s biggest EDM festival heads east.

After expanding to Georgia and São Paulo in recent years, Belgium’s Tomorrowland is plotting an event in India.

The location may appear unlikely at the moment, but Tomorrowland organisers seem to think that India – with its huge, and proportionally very young, population – is the next major market for EDM.

Local news site The Asian Age recently reported that Universal Music India is “looking to expand its live music space in India and there can be nothing bigger than Tomorrowland”, while India’s tourism minister Dilip Parulekar revealed that the festival has made a proposal to stage an event in mid-January, but has yet to find a suitable location.

Following the success of Goa’s EDM festival Sunburn, which attracted 160,000 fans in 2013, it seems feasible that Tomorrowland would also look for a spot in the traditional trance destination. As Beatport reports, festival organisers haven’t yet made an official statement, but a Facebook page called ‘Tomorrowland 2014 India’ has been set up and already has over 75,000 likes.
