Ebola scare hits New York's CMJ Music Marathon

Man diagnosed with the virus had been at The Gutter venue in Brooklyn.

New York City has confirmed its first Ebola case in a man who attended a show as part of this week’s CMJ Music Marathon. Dr. Craig Spencer attended Williamsburg venue The Gutter on Wednesday night (October 22) and was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center yesterday suffering from a high fever, where he later tested positive for the disease.

Last night’s Goodnight Records showcase at the Gutter (featuring performances from Heaven, Big Sleep, Friend Roulette, and Sun Club) was cancelled as a result of the news. Initial reports in the New York Times suggested that Dr Spencer, who had recently returned from Guinea where he was working with Doctors Without Borders to combat the Ebola outbreak, had been at the Brooklyn Bowl as well, but officials have confirmed that he only attended The Gutter.

The NYC Department Of Health said it had begun “to actively trace all of the patient’s contacts to identify anyone who may be at potential risk,” but the message seems to be that anyone who was at The Gutter on Wednesday shouldn’t panic. At a press conference last night, Mayor Bill de Blasio said: “Our understanding is that very few people were in direct contact with him.” [via Stereogum]
