Cream bassist Jack Bruce dies aged 71

Jack Bruce, bassist in 1960s supergroup Cream, has died aged 71.

The band he formed with guitarist Eric Clapton and drummer Ginger Baker sold millions of albums in the two years they were together, with Bruce writing and singing most of the songs, including ‘Sunshine Of Your Love’ and ‘I Feel Free’.

Cream split in November 1968 at the height of their popularity, but they reunited for a series of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in 2005. Before joining the band, Bruce had played in a number of other early ’60s groups including John Mayall’s Blues Breakers and Manfred Mann.

A statement on his official website said: “It is with great sadness that we, Jack’s family, announce the passing of our beloved Jack: husband, father and granddad and all-round legend.

“The world of music will be a poorer place without him, but he lives on in his music and forever in our hearts.” [via BBC]
