The Week's Best Vinyl Releases

Few people are onto great records as quickly as a great record store.

After years spent discovering gems in Phonica’s end of year lists, it made sense to give them a regular space on FACT. Every Saturday, staff from the Soho institution will pick out the five vinyl records you should grab this week.

HENRY GILLES
Collected Works Part 01 EP
(Public Possession)

Public Possession invites Munich’s Henry Gilles onboard for his second release, following a 12″ on Rawax, which cherry-picks highlights from the past three years, from the sensual after-hours glow of ‘Gone But Not Forgotten’ and the heaving, downbeat groove of ‘Exploring 0°S, 102° O’ to the much funkier ‘Transatlantic’ and its bouncy edit.

BORIS BLANK
‘The Time Tunnel/Big Beans’
(Blank Media)

The inimitable and pioneering Boris Blank, founder of Swiss electro-pop goofsters Yello, drops two tracks ahead of his Electrified box set – a brooding, krautish adventure in ‘The Time Tunnel’ and the club-ready ‘Big Beans’. Great titles both, and cut louder for the ‘floor. Limited to 500 so be quick.

FIZZY VEINS
World of Echo’s Volume 1 EP
(Worldwide Echo’s)

World of Echo, a new Australian label named after wonky disco genius Arthur Russell’s greatest album, presents a jolly trio of edits from Germany’s Fizzy Veins, dabbling in groovy-baby Latin rhythms and sparkly, slap bass silliness.

JONE TAKAMÄKI TRIO
Universal Mind LP
(Arc Light Editions)

A most beguiling record of spiritual improv from 1982, little known outside Finland, which draws on traditional jazz instrumentation as well as Indian and Japanese instruments and recalls Alice Coltrane’s dreamiest moments. A great find.
