Download Cubby's visceral debut mixtape PIECES featuring Rome Fortune, OG Maco, and more

The new talent shines with a little help from his friends.

Cubby made his debut earlier this year with the ominous Hooded EP for New York’s Mermaid Avenue imprint and caught our ear with his production on Rome Fortune’s Small VVorld.

“Music’s always been a visceral thing to me,” he writes, “it’s all about the emotion I feel or am trying to convey. That’s probably why I’ve been primarily a drummer. It’s such a physical instrument.”

That visceral approach to percussion is definitely on display in his debut mixtape PIECES, which favors blown-out, industrial-tinged rap and R&B bangers. The tape features Rome, ‘U Guessed It’ maniac OG Maco and newcomers Kwane and Chuck Ellis, and it’s bracketed by remixes of MØ and Sia.

“When I was growing up playing in orchestras, I always memorized everything so I could focus on feeling and not a piece of paper,” he explains. “When I studied jazz, I spent months almost only playing a ride cymbal, studying each and every note, the different textures. Figuring out to convey emotion through a piece of metal changed my life.”
