The recent documentary aired on Channel 4 in the UK last night.

Time Is Illmatic was released in 2014 to mark 20 years since the release of Nas’s groundbreaking debut album, Illmatic.

Taking us inside the Queensbridge rapper’s creative process, the doc sees Nas discussing his upbringing and his influences, from the music of his jazz musician father Olu Dara to New York’s hip-hop scene, and the obstacles he faced before signing a record deal aged 19. Illmatic producers Large Professor, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, L.E.S., and DJ Premier are all interviewed alongside the likes of Pharrell Williams and Alicia Keys.

The film is now available to watch on 4OD for 29 days (from March 5). Last year FACT spoke to the documentary’s director to find out why it took 10 years to make the definitive Illmatic movie.

Meanwhile, Nas was one of the many hip-hop-leaning guest artists to appear on Madonna’s latest album Rebel Heart. [Hat tip to @ntoin_a]
