A group of women have raised over $36,000 to put on a giant dance party for a man bullied online for his dancing, with a host of celebrities offering to perform at the event for free.

An image uploaded to 4chan of a man dancing went viral recently, cruelly describing him as a “specimen” and mocking his moves. After seeing the picture Twitter user Cassandra Fairbanks appealed to the internet to help track down the dancing man, tweeting: “Anyone know this man or who posted this? There’s a huge group of ladies in LA who would like to do something special.”

The special event in question was a planned dance party in Los Angeles, the unidentified man intended as guest of honour along with 1,727 women who also pledged their support. He was soon identified as a man called Sean from London, and started his own Twitter account to show his thanks, saying: “Big thanks to all who have tweeted such kind words. Not stopped smiling and laughing.”

The goodwill didn’t stop there. Fairbanks also launched a GoFundMe page to raise money to bring Sean to the party and make it a big one, raising over $36,000 – well in excess of the $20,000 target. A host of celebrities and musicians have since offered to play the party for free, including Pharrell Williams, Moby and the perennial king of party Andrew WK.

Though the campaign has reached its target, anything not spent on the party will be donated to an anti-bullying charity – you can donate at GoFundMe.
