The new station aims to shine a light on the DJ talent based in the north of England.

London, Berlin and New York aren’t short of online community-based radio stations, but it’s fair to say the concept is under-represented outside these cultural hotspots. It looks like that might be about to change, as a new station called KMAH Radio is set to launch in Leeds this week, run by a team including music writer Kristan J Caryl and promotions manager of the city’s Wire club Hamish Cole.

“The thinking behind this new project is that the city is the best outside London for house and techno party wise, but that it lacks in other areas,” the team explains in a press release. “There seems to be a trend for local DJs, producers and parties to get to a certain level of success then up and leave for the capital or Berlin. We think there needs to be more community to go someway toward solidifying the city and wider north of England scenes… enter KMAH Radio.”

The station will initially be broadcasting from 12pm-12am daily from its studio in Leeds city centre. Maurice Fulton, Happa, Bill Brewster, The Black Dog, Outlaws Yacht Club, Cottam, Krysko, Bonar Bradbery/PBR Streetgang, A Sagittariun, Ethyl & Flori, BLM, Dave Beer, Man Power, Illusion Records, Butter Side Up, Marco Bernardi and teshno are all lined up to present regular shows, “taking in everything from drone to afro, Latin to kwaito, techno to soul, rare dub to dark disco.”

KMAH Radio starts regular transmission on Wednesday March 11, but it will be officially launched with a public broadcast tonight (March 10) at Outlaws Yacht Club. Local talents Joe’s Bakery, Jack Martin and PBR Streetgang’s Bonar Bradbury will join KMAH residents and founders playing on rotation from 7pm-12am.
