The forthcoming documentary on Kurt Cobain will open in New York, Los Angeles and Seattle.

The family-authorized Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck recently debuted at Sundance to critical acclaim, and though the intimate look at the Nirvana frontman was only scheduled for an HBO release, now it’s been announced that the film will be shown at cinemas in New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle next month. The theatrical release is required for a film to qualify for the Academy Awards, which seems like an increasingly realistic prospect.

Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck will be out internationally April 10, in US locations April 24, followed by its HBO debut on May 4. Watch the trailer below.
