The innovative Norwegian 8-piece have drifted from jazz on their latest LP.

Experimental jazz troupe Jaga Jazzist recently marked 20 years together with the release of their ’94-’14 retrospective box set for Ninja Tune. The Norwegian collective will return to the British-based label for a new album, due to be released at the beginning of June.

The new LP is titled Starfire and was made after the band’s core songwriter Lars Horntveth relocated to Los Angeles. Horntveth’s bandmates visited him to record parts of the album in his apartment before he eventually returned to Oslo to finish the project in a recording studio.

Starfire sees Jaga Jazzist move away from their jazz leanings towards a more studio-oriented approach, placing emphasis on electronics and the guitar playing of band member Marcus Forsgren. “The idea was that we thought about the songs as both the original song and a remix in one,” said the band in a statement.

Jaga Jazzist’s Starfire will be released via Ninja Tune on June 1. You can pre-order the album via Ninja Tune’s website. [via Exclaim]
