Yet another of London’s small venues faces closure.

Bethnal Green’s Rich Mix could be forced to shut down if it cannot resolve a dispute over repayments with Tower Hamlets council. A petition launched in support of the arts centre says the council is demanding the money is paid back in one go, “which would result in the closure of Rich Mix”.

“We have made offers to the council to settle the amount owed by making payments over a period of time, but the council have rejected this resolution and continue to spend council tax payers money on this unnecessary legal action,” states Rich Mix. “The legal action being taken by Tower Hamlets against Rich Mix has the potential to bankrupt the organisation and cause us to close down and stop providing the services and facilities we offer.”

It isn’t clear how much money is owed, but the arts centre, which hosts exhibitions and gigs with a focus on performers from around the world, claims it is “financially healthy”, having had no revenue support from the council since March 2009. Head to Change.org to read and sign the petition.

The capital’s clubs have been falling like dominoes over the past year, with the closure of Plastic People, Madame Jojo’s and Vibe Bar among others. Earlier today it was revealed that south London’s Crucifix Lane nightspot is shutting down to make way for redevelopment.
