London’s best-kept secret delves into his vast record collection.

Gareth Goddard – better known as NTS resident, DJ and producer Cherrystones – will be putting his talents as a crate digger into practice for a compilation of new wave, post-punk and industrial music on David Holmes’ Touch Sensitive label next month.

As Juno Plus reports, Cherrystones Presents Critical Mass: Splinters From The Worldwide New-Wave, Post-Punk and Industrial Underground 1978 – 1984 took some two years to compile, and features a number of Goddard’s favourites from the late ’70s and early ’80s heyday of the seminal genres.

“This compilation was put together through records I was enjoying at that time – loose chips, fragmented discoveries, random punts and the true excitement from that hit of ‘What the fuck is that?!'”, Goddard explains in a press release. “It is an exercise in the good and the rad – solid jams from all corners of the world. A veritable platter to switch on the uninitiated or those who hear and feel the truth – it is not an exercise in rarity to make people feel alienated.”

The album is released on 2LP, CD and digital formats on May 25 with tracks from a number of obscure acts, including The Tee-Vees, Transmitters and 39 Clocks – a three-track sampler featuring Rizzo, Dojoji and Fote can be streamed below.

New wave, post-punk and industrial aren’t the only genres Cherrystones is an expert in – several years ago he selected the 20 best Krautrock records ever made for FACT.
