Judge’s Chung King Can Suck It sold for $6,048.

An album by a US hardcore band recently became the single most expensive item ever purchased on Discogs.

Released by straight-edge hardcore act Judge back in 1989, Chung King Can Suck It has attained legendary status among hardcore record collectors, regularly making over $6,000 when copies appear on eBay.

Initially called Bringin’ It Down, the album’s rarity is reportedly a result of its fraught recording session. Run-DMC, Beastie Boys and LL Cool J were occupying three out of four studios at Chung King studios where the band were recording, meaning Judge had to make do with with the least technologically advanced studio.

The studio engineer was also a coke addict who didn’t show up on the third day, leaving the band with an engineer inexperienced in punk to finish the sessions off. The band were unhappy with the result, but the vinyl stampers had already been made and Judge’s label boss opted to press a limited run of 100 to satisfy the fans who pre-ordered – the band renamed it Chung King Can Suck It.

Though the proper version of Bringin’ It Down appeared later that year, the 110 copies in circulation have increased massively in value – the most expensive sold on eBay last year for $6,600. “I’m bewildered,” lead vocalist Mike Judge told Westword last year of the eBay sale. “I don’t know why that record is worth anything to anybody when it’s not worth anything to the people who created it.”
