More good news for the troubled retailer.

The revival of the formerly ailing HMV looks set to continue, as the Sunday Telegraph reports it is launching a new retail website within the next few weeks.

Customers have been unable to purchase anything from HMV’s website since its collapse and subsequent rescue by restructuring firm Hilco in 2013, with the online storefront replaced with an editorial focus. The company instead switched to selling exclusively through its physical stores, a strategy that saw HMV regain its crown as the UK’s top music retailer from Amazon earlier this year.

The announcement comes in the wake of the news that there was a fall in digital sales by 17 per cent last year, while physical sales rose seven per cent.

“People are switching from downloads to streaming music, so digital is eating digital but physical music sales are recovering,” said Hilco and HMV chief executive Paul McGowan.

HMV’s relaunch involved its remaining stores taking a few tips from independent stores, something that helped it to a £17 million profit last year after 11 months in administration. [via Music Week]
