The Berlin festival returns in August to take over the Kraftwerk building.

Berlin Atonal has announced the first names for this year’s festival, returning in August with another line-up highlighting the more experimental side of techno and ambient electronics.

The festival is headed up by a number of interesting one-off commissions, including a live performance of Outside the Dream Syndicate, the legendary 1973 collaboration between avant-garde pioneer Tony Conrad and krautrock band Faust. Joining them will be SUMS, the pairing of Raster-Noton artist Kangding Ray and Mogwai’s Barry Burns that sees them create a soundscape with a range of amplified and electronic instruments that “blends elements of both of their respective musical legacies and trajectories.”

Also appearing is Nine Inch Nails member Alessandro Cortini (pictured above), who will be performing last year’s Hospital Productions album Sonno as part of a live A/V set, minimalist composer David Borden and the Mother Mallard Ensemble, Regis and Ancient Methods’ Ugandan Methods collaboration, Mike Parker, Ena, Ryo Murakami, Chra and Fis, who recently announced his debut album. Organisers promise more names will be added in the coming months.

Berlin Atonal takes place on August 19-23 at Berlin’s Kraftwerk building, with after parties taking place at Tresor, OHM and various other venues in the Kraftwerk complex. Tickets can be found at the Berlin Atonal website – a limited number of early bird passes are available for €85.60.
