According to various reports, Lil Wayne told the crowd at this weekend’s KMEL Summer Jam that he’s now signed to Jay Z’s Roc Nation.

What Wayne didn’t specify is whether that means he’ll be releasing music through them, or that he’s simply joined their management roster (as with Grimes, DJ Mustard, Big Sean and more). He did almost sign to the label several years ago though, and his $51m worth of problems with Cash Money have been well publicised. Add that to the fact that he’s already in bed with TIDAL, and the move makes a lot of sense.

Back in 2013, Jay Z claimed that he could have signed Wayne but didn’t want to ruin his relationship with Cash Money’s Baby. Speaking to The Breakfast Club, he said “I called him out of respect like ‘Yo, I was talking to Wayne. Just to let you know. Boom boom boom.’ So, after that I think we received a letter at our office for like torturous [sic] interference from a lawyer … I would rather lose that situation and do the right thing than the opposite. Cause I think I could have signed him. I could have signed him and then told him after. I did the right thing and I’m cool with that decision.”

Update: Lil Wayne’s manager claims he has not signed to Roc Nation. Cortez Bryant says that Wayne was referring to an agreement he had reached with Jay Z’s Tidal streaming service.

“The Internet and blogs took his words out of context,” Bryant told Billboard. “When Wayne was speaking about the partnership with Jay Z, he was speaking about his new deal as an artist owner with Tidal.”
