Few people are onto great records as quickly as a great record store.

Phonica’s end of year lists are always a treasure trove for undersung gems, so we realised we ought to just give the shop’s learned staff their own slot on FACT. Every Saturday, the team behind the counter at the Soho institution select five vinyl records you should pick up this week.

VARIOUS ARTISTS
Mac-talla Nan Creag LP
(Firecracker Recordings)

This album is the result of a unique collaboration between Firecracker and the Forestry Commission Scotland to create music that would capture the feel and history of the Scottish Highlands. The artists, including Lord Of The Isles, Other Lands, House Of Traps and Wounded Knee, visited sites, captured field recordings and, according to the press release, drank a lot of whisky. Merging modern technology with traditional instruments and voices, the album is a celebration of the Highland’s deep rooted history and comes in a limited edition vinyl with a booklet produced by the Forestry Commission Scotland.

RUF DUG
Island LP
(Music For Dreams)

Island is the debut album by producer Ruf Dug, recorded in a three-month period on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe using a portable studio that fit in a suitcase. The Dane wrote music inspired by the idyllic setting of the island and the result is a collection of tracks that fit somewhere between sunset lounge and tropical adventures.

PTAKI
Przelot LP
(Transatlantyk)

The debut album on Transatlantyk comes courtesy of Polish duo Ptaki (or birds in Polish), who have most recently been seen on L.A.’s Young Adults. Here the pair combine acoustic guitars, rhodes and treated bass across a selection of reggae, sleazy chuggers and slow workouts ideal for fans of Yacht Rock and blissed-out moments.

SHED
Constant Power
(The Final Experiment)

This one shouldn’t need much explaining and fans of classic vibes shouldn’t require much convincing. Shed is back with a 12″ of old school techno. Get on it before it’s too late.
