“The Shell and Pennzoil brands are aligning with the power of live music.”

Entertainment giant Live Nation has teamed up with multinational oil company Shell in what must be one of the most absurd examples of music sponsorship we’ve ever seen.

Shell Oil Products US, the American division of a multi-national company responsible for untold environmental damage, has been announced as Live Nation’s “official fuel sponsor,” while the company’s Pennzoil brand, will be the “official lubricant sponsor” for eight of the entertainment company’s amphitheatres across the US.

Far from just being on hand to provide the company’s fleet of trucks with the means to get from A to B, the press release explains that it builds on the Pennzoil-sponsored Backseat Pass, “a video series on a custom-designed site with musical artists performing a song in the backseat of a moving vehicle, bringing to life the natural connection between music and cars in a compelling way.”

As if this partnership didn’t already sound bad enough, the press release goes on to say that “the Shell and Pennzoil brands are aligning with the power of live music” – much like some gruesome, carbon-emitting supergroup of rock dinosaurs we’d imagine – “to create unique experiences for consumers and fans at select Live Nation venues.”

“Over the past few years, Pennzoil has created an expanding footprint in the music category, enhancing fan passion for cars and music along the way. In 2015, together with Live Nation, Pennzoil will continue on their journey to take musical performances to the next level,” said Pennzoil brand director Doug Kooyman.

If, like us, your curiosity has gotten the better of you regarding Backseat Pass, you can watch confusingly popular US act OK Go perform in the back of a moving vehicle, “Powered by Pennzoil™”.
