Local DJ Claudia Wilson has set up her soul, funk and reggae specialist in Reliance Arcade.

London has welcomed another new record shop with the opening of Pure Vinyl in the centre of Brixton. Owner Claudia Wilson has lived in Brixton all her life and been a DJ for 20 years, previously holding down a residency at the sadly defunct Mango Landin’ bar.

After the closure of Mango Landin’, Claudia continued selling records from a stall in Granville Arcade, and now she’s upgraded to a bricks-and-mortar outpost in nearby Reliance Arcade with her partner Markie, founder of record label Universal Roots and part of the touring RDK Hi-Fi sound system.

Pure Vinyl promises a wide variety of music alongside its specialist genres, with rock ‘n’ roll, jazz and punk records also filling the racks.

Wilson told Brixton Buzz: “This has been quite an achievement for me as a local black woman in her 50s who has lived in Brixton all her life. I have witnessed and embraced many of the changes in Brixton but have been determined to stamp my own mark on my home town and to create a different record buying experience.”

Pure Vinyl is the latest in a string of new record shop openings across the capital, with Rye Wax, Love Vinyl and YAM Records all arriving in the past year along with new branches of Sister Ray and Flashback Records.

Meanwhile, Hackney outlet Vinyl Pimp has been hosting private viewings of its astonishing 24,000 record haul. [via The Vinyl Factory]
