From Nickelodeon to the silver screen to Broadway.

A musical based on SpongeBob Squarepants will debut in 2016 at Broadway in Chicago’s Oriental Theatre as a limited engagement from June 7 to July 3, with a planned Broadway opening to follow.

It will feature original songs by Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, They Might Be Giants and more. In addition, David Bowie will contribute a song as well.

“We’re taking our leads from the TV show but this is an original story, with an original design approach, and original songs written just for the occasion by an amazing array of songwriters,” says director and co-conceiver Tina Landua. The musical features a book by Kyle Jarrow and music supervision by Tom Kitt. [via EW]
