The Blur frontman casts doubts on the quality of the follow-up to 21.

Damon Albarn has called Adele’s new material “middle of the road” after collaborating with the singer on her first album since 2011.

The Blur frontman revealed his work with the singer to The Sun, but doesn’t believe his contributions will make the final album.

Albarn said: “Adele asked me to work with her and I took the time out for her. And I’m not a producer, so… I don’t know what is happening really. Will she use any of the stuff? I don’t think so. Let’s wait and see. The thing is, she’s very insecure. And she doesn’t need to be, she’s still so young.”

Albarn was one of several collaborators to work on the album along with Tobias Jesso Jr, Max Martin, Danger Mouse, and OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder. The album is expected to be released in November.

Albarn said in July that he would begin recording the next Gorillaz album this month.
