Thomas William has been a lynchpin of Sydney’s underground electronic music scene for almost a decade. The idiosyncratic producer has been releasing music under a variety of different monikers for the past ten years, most recently delivering an experimental cassette under the name T. Morimoto. As a producer and teacher, William has influenced the work of fellow Sydney acts like Seekae and Cliques.

The Australian artist will release a new EP via Sydney imprint Plastic World in November. Annum Contra features a handful of guests, including vocalist Chunyin (aka Rainbow Chan) and MCs Lamtech9 and Kid Kairo. The latter pair regularly attend Lion Mountain Studio, a community recording space for young people from Sydney’s Sierra Leonian community where William volunteers.

Annum Contra collects four tracks, including the evocative ‘Tuition’. That track “reflects William’s interest in stretching clichés and testing aesthetic standards,” according to press materials. “I like the idea of building something around a really stock emotional fragment – how far can you go with just a minor triad, or a straight arpeggio, or a few tuned drum sounds?” Williams asks. “Can you undercut and reclaim musical clichés?”

Thomas William’s Annum Contra EP will be released via Plastic World in November. Stream ‘Tuition’ and watch the video below.
