The always-experimenting Matmos have released an app.

Chalkwell Park is the result of a week spent wandering round the park in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, in June of this year. The electronic duo sampled the sounds of the people and the environment, with peacocks, skateboards, fences, a playground and a pond all captured on their recorders.

The idea is that once you’ve downloaded the app, you’ll head to the park with your headphones in and use the map to navigate towards different hotspots where tracks the duo have created will automatically play.

If you’re not planning an Essex day out any time soon, you can also hear the tracks by clicking on ‘MP3’ in the app. There’s about half an hour of material in there – download it free from the App Store.

Get inside the unique minds of Matmos in our previous interview with Drew Daniel and Martin ‘MC’ Schmidt, and find out about side project The Soft Pink Truth’s black metal covers album.
