TV series dubbed the “World Cup of EDM” has been scrapped.

Simon Cowell’s new TV show Ultimate DJ has been cancelled months before it was due to air. Yahoo resurrected the project last year after it was shelved in 2012, and had planned to broadcast Ultimate DJ as part of its shift toward original programming. Music fans everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief with the online giant deciding to pull the plug on the project.

Simon Cowell appeared on stage at Yahoo’s NewFront event in April to promote the reality series, which promised the winner a recording contract with Sony and a headline slot at a music festival. Yahoo’s chief marketing officer Kathy Savitt explained that the show was “very much like the World Cup of EDM — country against country, DJ against DJ, fanbase against fanbase.”

Yahoo has made the decision not to move forward with the series, which was set to debut in early 2016. This means that unless another network or streaming service picks up the show, it will not be broadcast. A rep for Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment declined to comment. [via Variety]
