Former peer-to-peer file sharing service is resurrected as a streaming platform.

Napster has relaunched in Canada as a subscription-based music streaming service. Canadian users can purchase online streaming and offline playback access to around 35 million songs for CAN$9.99 (US$7.65) a month. For a limited time, you can sign up and get the first three months’ worth of access for $1.

“It was important to us that we enter Canada with a personalized music experience that has a complete catalog of local, national and international artists,” said Napster CFO Ethan Rudin in a statement.

Napster was forced to shut down following pressure from the RIAA and others in 2001, later being re-branded as a subscription-based digital retailer. It was purchased by Rhapsody in 2011, and the latter company absorbed Napster into its existing business. The platform has laid dormant until now, with the new Napster service currently available in Canada on the iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Web, Sonos and Chromecast platforms.
