The BAFTA nominations are out, and a bunch of our favourites are nominated in the Best Original Music category.

Ryuichi Sakamoto & Alva Noto’s bleak score for frozen western The Revenant will vie with Jóhann Jóhannsson’s epic Swans-inspired soundtrack for Sicario and Ennio Morricone’s score for Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight.

Thomas Newman is nominated for his work on Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies, while John Williams takes the final slot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which seems like a bit of a cheat, doesn’t it.

The winners will be announced at the Orange British Academy Film Awards ceremony at the Royal Opera House in London on Sunday, February 14.

Sadly, The Revenant score – which can still be streamed here – is not eligible for an Oscar, as Sakamoto’s work is intertwined with that of two other composers, which isn’t allowed by the Academy. The Revenant leads the BAFTA nominations with a whopping nine nods.

Last year we spoke to Jóhann Jóhannsson about how to compose an award-winning Hollywood soundtrack, and he made us a FACT mix.
