For his latest show on BBC Radio 6, Gilles Peterson visited Bristol for the day and explored the city’s lengthy music history with some help from drum & bass legend DJ Krust.
Seeking to trace Bristol’s modern lineage, from sound systems to post-punk, hip-hop to jungle, and onto dubstep and today’s innovators, Peterson spoke with Jabulani of Black Roots, Richard King (author of Original Rockers), Janine Rainforth of Maximum Joy, Mark Stewart of The Pop Group, DJ Krust, Mo’ Wax label boss James Lavelle, Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, Roni Size and Appleblim.
The 3-hour session is a perfect introduction to just how influential Bristol has been in shaping a UK sound in the past 40 years. And the tracklist isn’t to be frowned at either.
