Girls and Mad Men actress Zosia Mamet has been cast as Patti Smith in a forthcoming movie about Robert Mapplethorpe.

Matt Smith, best known as Doctor Who, will play Mapplethorpe, the artist and photographer who became Smith’s best friend when she moved to New York City at the turn of the 1970s (he also took the iconic shot of Smith on the cover of her album Horses).

The biopic, titled Mapplethorpe, comes from writer and director Ondi Timoner, who previously won at Sundance for the cult rock documentary DIG, which followed the bizarre and turbulent relationship between West Coast bands Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. The film is due to start production this summer, as Deadline reports.

It’s one of two projects about Smith and Mapplethorpe currently in the works, with Smith’s best-selling 2013 memoir Just Kids also set to be turned into a television mini-series. Smith is currently working on her third memoir, a detective mystery and a kids’ book.
