Claire Boucher blames the lack of female producers on the industry’s “hostile environment”.

Grimes has claimed that “numerous” male producers have tried to coerce her into sex in a new interview with Rolling Stone. The Canadian musician was responding to a question about Kesha’s failed attempt to leave her contract with producer Dr. Luke, who allegedly subjected her to years of sexual and emotional abuse.

“I don’t know enough about the specifics of that situation, because it seems very complicated,” Boucher said.

“But I will say that I’ve been in numerous situations where male producers would literally be like, ‘We won’t finish the song unless you come back to my hotel room.’ If I was younger or in a more financially desperate situation, maybe I would have done that.

“I don’t think there are few female producers because women aren’t interested. It’s difficult for women to get in. It’s a pretty hostile environment.”

After being denied a preliminary injunction in February, Kesha’s case was thrown out of court earlier this month, with the judge siding with her label, Sony, and Dr. Luke.

Grimes had previously compared Kesha’s situation to slavery, saying: “You shouldn’t be allowed to sign a human being, regardless of what the allegations are or what anyone said or did. It’s basically like slavery. She should be allowed to record [with other people]. It’s a deeply fucked situation.”

After releasing Art Angels to huge acclaim in October last year, Grimes recently said she’s “halfway done” with her next album, which she described as “downtempo, synthy shit”.
