Some of the greatest video games (and their world class soundtracks) are even easier to get.

Today, Nintendo dropped a trio of classic video games on the New 3DS Virtual Console: Super Metroid, The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past and Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest.

Each of the Super Nintendo releases are arguably the best in their respective franchises and definitively some of the best video games ever made. It’s not just about gameplay though — in very different ways, each of these contain some of the greatest examples of video game music in history.

Donkey Kong Country 2 represents the peak of longtime composer David Wise, not to mention the catalyst for Ryan Hemsworth’s entire career as our interview between the two confirmed.

A Link To The Past remains the finest top-down Zelda game and owes a great deal of that to Koji Kondo who gave us the Super Mario Bros. theme (which recently had a book written about it).

It’s Super Metroid, however, that looms above both with Kenji Yamamoto and Minako Hamano’s miasmatic drones and cathartic melodies. All these games ranked high in last year’s feature on the 100 greatest video game soundtracks, but Super Metroid‘s dark, emotional soundscapes landed it in the top 5 and a class of its own.

They’re all available on the New 3DS’ Virtual Console starting today.
