Barcelona-born music site, which lets you playlist YouTube, Bandcamp, Vimeo and SoundCloud songs in one place, adds new subscription tool for bands, labels, promoters and beyond.

Playmoss have announced a new subscription service, giving music fans a new way to support the artists and labels they love. Called simply Subscription by Playmoss, fans can now “follow” an artist on the platform for a fee determined by the artist. In return musicians will offer exclusive tracks, records, merchandise and even concert tickets, according to the Barcelona-based company.

The site, which launched last year, has till now been mainly about its playlisting feature: rather than having to skip between different platforms where artists keep their music, Playmoss lets you roll tracks from YouTube, Bandcamp, Vimeo and SoundCloud into one place. Now, however, you’ll be able to keep up with your favourite acts directly, as part of a business model the firm says could be more lucrative for artists than streaming services.

The idea originated from the artists’ complaints about the limited revenue derived from streaming, despite having thousands of fans on their social networks,” reads a statement from Playmoss. “If only 1% of the artists’ [social media followers] registered for a 2€ or 3€ subscription, the artist would make more than they would from all the streaming channels put together.”

Users can chose to pay their subscription fees monthly, quarterly or annually and with Floating Points, Bonobo and Simian Mobile Disco among the artists to have used the site’s other tools so far, as well as festivals like Sonar, you can expect some strong artists to soon adopt the new service.
