Second weekend of Californian festival turns purple.

Coachella began the second half of its 2016 festival under the sign of Prince, who died on Thursday this week at the age of 57.

According to Billboard, palm trees on the festival site in Indio glowed purple and tributes to the Minnesota artist began in earnest with soul singer Mavis Staples, once signed to Prince’s Paisley Park label, performing an a cappella version of the chorus from ‘Purple Rain’. Over the course of the first evening acts including Joey Bada$$, Jack U, Gallant and Jhene Aiko, and Ellie Goulding all paid their respects.

LCD Soundsystem, who headlined the first night of performances, performed a cover of Prince’s ‘Controversy’ while Sufjan Stevens and Gallant took on ‘Purple Rain’, Prince’s trademark song. You can view fan footage of both performances below.
