Chance The Rapper tells Complex about meeting the late Phife Dawg, Frank Ocean’s new album, and his growth as an artist.

In the wake of the release of Coloring Book, his new mixtape, Chance The Rapper sat down with Complex Magazine during the shoot of their new magazine cover to discuss his work with Kanye West, Donnie Trumpet, and more.

While working in Los Angeles on the Surf album alongside Donnie Trumpet, Chance revealed that Busta Rhymes, who was there to record his featuring on the album, invited the late A Tribe Called Quest rapper Phife Dawg up to the studio. Chance played him the Surf sessions they were working on and “talked about the positivity of the music.”

The interview also covers Chance’s approach to being an independent artist, getting iTunes to create a complimentary download of the Donnie Trumpet album and appearing twice on The Tonight Show, most recently to premiere the Coloring Book song ‘Blessings’.

Chance also noted his growth since the acclaimed Acid Rap mixtape, saying that becoming a father and touring the world had changed him. To those who are discovering him now, he admitted that Coloring Book is “worlds better than my previous work.”

Lastly, Chance said he believes Frank Ocean is currently away “making a masterpiece” and that it’s not just publications who can’t get a hold of him. Watch the full interview below.
