The original member is credited with coming up with the group’s name.

John Berry, an original member of the Beastie Boys, died this morning in hospice in Danvers, MA, Rolling Stone reports. He was 52.

Berry’s death was caused by frontal-lobe dementia which grew worse in recent months, his father, John Berry III, confirmed to Rolling Stone.

Though the Beastie Boys are often thought of as a trio, the group predates their album debut Licensed To Ill by several years.

Berry was a founding member of the group in 1981 and is best known for coming up with the name “Beastie Boys” and lending his loft for their first band practices. On record, he played guitar on their debut 7″ Polly Wog Stew and left shortly after to be replaced by Ad-Rock.

Berry was acknowledged by Adam Yauch in a speech read by Ad-Rock and Mike D at the group’s induction at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2012.
