Yesterday, we were exposed to some pretty encouraging news: Detroit rapper Danny Brown has signed to UK experimental outpost Warp Records and has a new album ready for imminent deployment. Now, we’ve got some more tantalizing details from an interview with Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, who premiered the as-yet-untitled album’s first single ‘When It Rain’ yesterday.

The most interesting nugget is that the record (which he says he has been working on since March 2014) is influenced by Talking Heads, particularly frontman David Byrne, who Brown called a legend. Brown noted the band’s visual presentation as an inspiration, and credited the 33 1/3 book on Fear Of Music, which was handed to him by his manager, as being particularly influential.

Danny Brown also talked about ‘When It Rain’, saying it reminded him of a “Detroit party, in the basement” and had purposefully filled it with local dance music nods to capture that era. “There’s a lot of dance music references in there,” he said, noting the DJ Assault shoutout in the first verse (“DJ Assault be slapping it back”). The idea for the video, however, came from a Talking Heads documentary, bringing the David Byrne influence right back into focus.

When asked about the new record deal, he said that it was “artistic freedom” that was most important, saying that he needed to be able to express himself creatively the way he wanted to.

As for what he’s been listening to lately, that would be Philly freshman and FACT favorite Lil Uzi Vert and Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool. The latter shouldn’t be too surprising, as Brown referenced Kid A as a massive influence on Old.
