Bumble, the Tinder-like dating app that only allows women to make first contact with a match, has linked up with Spotify so that users can connect their accounts with their dating profiles. The aim here is to allow people to get a fuller picture of their potential mate by seeing what music they listen to the most. Not all accounts have this function yet, as the app is slowing rolling the feature out.

But here’s how it will work, as explained by press release: “users can connect their Spotify account to their Bumble profile to showcase the top artists they listen to most on Spotify. If you’re eager to learn more about the artist displayed (and get some bonus talking points for your potential connection), you can click on the artist which will take you to the artist page on Spotify. This integration not only gives Bumble users a peek into the music preferences of their potential connection, but also provides an easy conversation starter.”

This is not a feature for music nerds, right?

Imagine your top artist on Spotify is Suicide and your date’s top artist is, let’s say, John Mayer. If his plan is to deep-dive into your music taste before your potentially awkward first meet-up for drinks – hey guy, here’s a beginner’s guide to No Wave that we’ve made – there is no way he is going to talk to you about Teenage Jesus and the Jerks with any authority. So who cares?

Cultural choices are arbitrary and have nothing to do with whether or not you will be a good romantic match. This new feature is for people who don’t think about music. And for real, if seeing something like Evian Christ or Lil Yachty is someone’s top played artist is the thing that inspires you to swipe right, have fun with that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
